Mr Comey was indicted just days after Trump pushed his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer the legal representative informed the court they intended to present several legal requests to dismiss the legal matter before a legal hearing, stating the legal action was vindictive and that a US attorney was unlawfully appointed to handle the proceedings.

James Comey's case was first overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under scrutiny from Trump after his investigation into another political adversary - the New York official - failed to initiate prosecution.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey appeared in good spirits as he came into the courtroom on Wednesday, conversing with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was supported by his wife, his wife and child Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration recently fired.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he informed the court.

Previous Events

The former director was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about several months into Trump's first term as commander-in-chief. At the period, the director was leading an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.

Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey sparked a counter-response from the Democratic party when he announced just immediately preceding the national vote that he was probing presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against Clinton were not filed, causing negative feedback from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Government attorneys assert James Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he misled the legislative body by claiming he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to release to media organizations details about the agency probes.

Prosecutors also allege Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to sway, block and delay" the panel by making false statements to it.

Public Statements

"Our household have known for years that there are ramifications to challenging Mr Trump," he said. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a court case."

The accusations against the former director surfaced after Trump published on digital channels demanding his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, charge the former director and others.
