Oklahoma City Thunder Kick Off Title Defense with Thrilling Double Overtime Win

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star joined Oklahoma City back in 2019.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the game-winning baskets late in double overtime as the defending champions started their championship campaign with a narrow win over the visiting Rockets.

The reigning MVP scored 35 points, featuring two from the free-throw line with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, giving the titleholders a positive start.

The Rockets' big man top-scored with 39 points and also connected on a personal-best five three-pointers.

But Chet Holmgren, who added 28 points, played a major role alongside the game's hero.

"Determination and defence," Gilgeous-Alexander commented of their performance. "We know that when we do it on defence we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, misses, fortune or misfortune. We did sufficient defence to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."

Prior to the game, the team's championship banner was unveiled at their home court, while the squad were presented with their championship rings.

Oklahoma City defeated the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the team relocated in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.

Indiana will have the chance to secure some early revenge on Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Houston are back on court on the identical day at the Detroit Pistons.

In other action, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was not enough to stop his current team the Los Angeles Lakers from falling to a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.

Miami's star scored 31 points and Stephen Curry chipped in 23 points for the visiting Warriors.

The Lakers were missing the league's top scorer LeBron James as he is recovering from sciatica.
