In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
