Unmasking Venezuela Celebration Footage and AI-Generated Pictures of Maduro.

AI-generated pictures purporting to show Nicolás Maduro detained after his capture by the American authorities have amassed countless of impressions on social media.

How Fake Pictures of Maduro Appeared Within Hours

The first fabricated AI image apparently displaying him taken off a aircraft surfaced shortly after. The graphic was absent from any authoritative American sources; it was instead posted on X by an profile purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.

Verification involved an AI-watermark detector, determining the picture was generated or edited with AI tools.

Further AI-generated images were disseminated in the subsequent period, purporting to present additional perspectives of the leader under guard. Noticeable logos on these pictures show they came from an Instagram profile called ultravfx.

The detection tool indicates all of these pictures were also generated or edited AI technology.

Authentic Image Released but Fakes Persisted

The former US president released the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro in handcuffs aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. But even after this confirmation was released, AI-generated pictures persisted online but were altered to incorporate the gray sweatsuit worn by Maduro.

Digital forensics indicate these altered fabrications were originally uploaded on TikTok by a graphic design profile. Once again, the AI-watermark detector says these subsequent pictures were produced with generative artificial intelligence.

Key Points:

  • Synthetic media gained traction after the news of the president's apprehension.
  • The initial fabricated picture appeared within hours on platform X.
  • Detection software like AI-watermark detectors were used to identify the images as inauthentic.
  • Fabrications persisted to circulate and evolve even after the release of real images.
  • The origin of several fakes was linked to social media profiles dedicated to AI art.
